Australian Hearse Builders

W.G. Smith was located in Lidcombe, in New South Wales.  They built hearses on a variety of different makes and models, and their hearses were mainly sold in NSW, although we’ve seen Smith cars in other states.

This is a 1961 Chrysler Royal built by Smith.  Originally powered by a flathead 6 cylinder with a 3 speed manual transmission, this car is now powered by a 318 Chrysler V8 with an automatic transmission.  This photo was taken at a classic car display day in 1990.

This is a Humber Super Snipe hearse with a Smith body.  This car is currently owned by a Sydney funeral director.  These photos were taken at Rookwood cemetery in 2002.

This interesting Mercedes hearse was built by Smith.  These photographs were taken at the Bendigo swap meet in the 1980s.  Note the difference in the age of the front panels of the car versus the rear quarters!  The whereabouts of this vehicle are unknown.

This 1959 Ford hearse has a body built by Smith.  This car is powered by a 332 V8 with an automatic transmission.  For the last few years, this car has been used as a transport for a Melbourne rock band.  These photos were taken in Melbourne in 1990.
